What is so different about Granny's Coffee Beans?
The key phrase here would be 'Freshly Roasted'. We buy top quality beans and roast them when you place an order. The only way to get fresher beans is to roast them yourself.

Why are there different levels of roast?
Consider that the roasting process 'cooks' the coffee bean. Just like a good steak, beans can be cooked light (rare), medium (medium), or dark (well done) to produce the flavors hidden in the bean. Generally, a light roast will produce the earthy flavor of the bean itself. Some consider this under cooked and prefer a medium roast, which still carries much of the bean flavor. Still others prefer a dark roast that subdues the bean flavor some but adds a woody or nutty characteristic.

Why don't you sell ground coffee?
Our objective is to supply Fresh Roasted beans. Once roasted, any coffee bean will begin to go stale within days. Exposure to air, light, moisture, and heat will greatly shorten the life of freshly roasted beans. By grinding the beans we expose more of the beans' surfaces to air, light, and heat causing a more rapid loss of flavor and aroma.

How should I store my coffee beans to keep them fresh?
If you plan to use your beans within a few days to a week, we recommend storing them in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place. If it is necessary to keep beans past a week, wrap the bag tightly in plastic wrap or in a zipper bag with the air removed and store them in the freezer. Be sure to let the beans warm up to room temperature before opening the bag to reduce condensation, since moisture also destroys flavor. It is best to buy smaller amounts more frequently than it is to store your beans for more than a week or two.

What is the best brewing method for Granny's beans?
Every method of creating coffee drinks produces a different result. Here at Granny's our everyday coffee maker is a 'pour-over' drip maker. There are many other ways of preparing coffee drinks and they all make a different tasting drink.

Are there notable differences between grinders?
Yes! There are two main types of coffee grinders for home use. Blade grinders look similar to a food processor and use a rapidly spinning blade to grind the beans. Burr grinders grind the bean against a steel burr. Burr grinders have coarseness of grind settings and control grind by length of grind time.

What are the best coffee makers?
If you ask that question of five coffee drinkers you will get five different answers. Ask the same five again a year later and you will likely get five more answers. This year one of our favorites is an 8-cup Chemex®, which is an all-glass pour-over maker with cone shaped filters. We also use a press-pot when we want a more flavorful extraction.
